What a TTM Squeeze Is and How to Trade It
A TTM Squeeze marks the moment a stock stops trending and starts coiling. Volatility contracts, the range tightens, and price sits still while pressure builds. When that pressure releases, the move that follows is often fast. The squeeze does not tell you which way it breaks, but it tells you a break is coming - and that is half the battle.
How the signal is built
The squeeze compares two volatility bands:
- Bollinger Bands, which measure standard deviation around a moving average.
- Keltner Channels, which measure average true range around the same average.
When the Bollinger Bands slip inside the Keltner Channels, volatility has compressed enough to call it a squeeze. The market is quiet, and quiet rarely lasts. When the bands push back outside, the squeeze "fires" and the coil releases.
Reading direction with the momentum histogram
Since the squeeze itself is directionless, pair it with a momentum histogram. Rising bars above zero lean bullish, falling bars below zero lean bearish. The cleanest setups are a squeeze that has been on for several bars, then fires in the same direction the histogram is already pointing.
A squeeze that has been building for two weeks and fires with momentum is worth more than one that flips on and off every other day.
A simple checklist
- The squeeze has been on for at least a handful of bars.
- Price is holding above a rising moving average for longs, below a falling one for shorts.
- Volume expands as the squeeze fires, confirming real participation.
- You know your invalidation level before you enter.
Where it goes wrong
The squeeze fails when you force it. A squeeze on a sideways, low-volume name can fire into more chop. Screen for squeezes on liquid stocks that are already trending, and let the ones without a clear direction pass. In Signum Lab you can scan hundreds of tickers for active squeezes in seconds, then check the momentum and volume before you commit.
Run this on your own list.
